A social commerce example: shoppable posts.

A shoppable post is a piece of content on social media — a photo, video, or story — that has a product attached to it. Tap it, and you can buy the item without leaving the app. That's it.

What makes a post 'shoppable'

A regular social post shows you a product. A shoppable post shows you a product and gives you a way to buy it in the same tap. That usually means a small tag, sticker, or button attached to the post that opens a purchase card right inside the app — no browser, no separate website, no long checkout.

Any of the big social apps let brands do this now. Instagram calls them Shopping tags, TikTok uses TikTok Shop, YouTube has product shelves under videos. Different names, same idea: the content and the checkout are in the same place.

Everyday examples of shoppable content

A tagged product on a photo

You tap a shirt in an Instagram photo. A small card appears with the size, colour, and price — and a button to buy it inside the app.

A product shelf under a video

A YouTube creator reviews a coffee grinder. Below the video, the grinder shows up as a shoppable card you can add to cart in one tap.

A TikTok video with a shop icon

A short TikTok clip has a small basket icon in the corner. Tapping it opens the product being used, ready to buy inside TikTok itself.

A creator's on-profile shop

A creator pins a mini-shop to their profile. Every product they've mentioned in recent posts is stocked there, one tap from checkout.

How brands see which post made the sale

When a shoppable post leads to a purchase, the brand can usually see which post, which creator, and which product was involved. That's often called content or product tracking. Instead of guessing which video "worked," brands get a plain answer: this post sold this many units of this product. It's what makes social commerce measurable, not just visible.

  • — The post itself is linked to the specific product being shown.
  • — The tap on the tag is recorded as interest from that post.
  • — The order that follows is matched back to the same post and product.
