Definition

Social commerce, defined in plain English.

No jargon, no buzzwords, no acronyms — just a clear working definition of social commerce, why the term exists, and what it looks like when it's actually happening.

01

The definition, in one sentence

Social commerce is buying and selling products directly inside social media apps. That's the whole idea. If a person can see a product in a post and finish the purchase without leaving the app they're in, that's social commerce — no website, no separate checkout page, no extra tabs.

  • The product is shown inside a social post, video, or profile.
  • The purchase happens inside the same social app.
  • The person never has to open a separate website to buy it.

02

Why the term exists at all

For most of the internet's history, buying online meant going to a store's website. Social media was where people discovered things; a website was where they bought them. Social commerce is the name for what happens when those two steps collapse into one — when the app you're scrolling in is also the store.

  • Discovery used to happen on social; buying used to happen on websites.
  • Now both live in the same place, on the same screen.
  • That combination is what people are pointing at when they say 'social commerce'.

03

What it looks like in real life

The clearest examples of social commerce show up as small purchase moments inside content people were already watching. A viewer sees the product, taps once or twice, and it's on the way. Nothing about the experience feels like online shopping in the older sense — no long checkout, no site loading, no login screen from a decade ago.

  • A TikTok video with a product tag underneath that you can tap to buy.
  • An Instagram post where the item is priced and shoppable inside the app.
  • A creator's storefront on YouTube stocked with the products they've talked about.

04

Social commerce vs. e-commerce, in one paragraph

E-commerce is any online shopping — usually on a brand's own website. Social commerce is a subset of that: it's e-commerce that happens inside a social media app instead of on a separate website. All social commerce is a form of e-commerce; not all e-commerce is social commerce.

  • E-commerce: broader term for buying anything online.
  • Social commerce: buying that stays inside a social media app.
  • The difference is where the sale takes place, not what's being sold.
